Twenty-five local organizations and individuals are being recognized with nominations for nine coveted CBIC awards including CBIC Educator of the Year, which comes with a $2,500 technology grant and CBIC Student Entrepreneur of the Year, which comes with a $1,000 grant, and the CBIC Volunteer of the Year, which is announced during the gala.

  • Medical Research Firm Growing Fast Since Move to Charlottesville

    Paul Bishop and Lyle Camblos moved their 30-person medical research company from Staunton to Charlottesville nearly four years ago to be closer to their labor pool and attract new employees. Since then, the Atlantic Research Group, which manages Food and Drug Administration clinical trials for drug companies bringing new products to market, has added about 50 employees and has no plans to slow down. The group saw nearly 50 percent growth last year, company officials said, and expects about 30 percent in 2017.

  • Cville-Based Startup Accelerator Looks to Combine Space, Mentorship, Investment to Retain Local Talent

    Lawrence Levine pulled in large outside investments in SecurePipe, the information security firm he founded in Charlottesville in 1996, the financial windfall came with a price. Levine, now a member of the Charlottesville Angel Network investment group, spent the next few years bouncing around the country, as new investments had him heading to new towns. After the 2015 sale of SecurePipe, now called Trustwave, to Singapore Telephone, Levine has returned to Charlottesville and wants to give local companies reasons to stay in town. A serial entrepreneur, Levine last year founded Cville Machine, a startup accelerator on Market Street that eventually will include a fund to get new companies through their Series A investment round.

  • Albemarle to Pursue Creation of Broadband Authority

    The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has taken a step toward forming a public body to help expand high-speed internet service across the county. “If the board wants to take another step in the direction of doing something about broadband, a wireless service authority might be something to consider,” said Deputy County Executive Bill Letteri.

    AgroSpheres is developing a biotech solution to degrade pesticides and has won numerous startup and innovation prizes. I was fortunate enough to catch up with one of the Founders, Payam Pourtaheri, right after AgroSpheres won the Charlottesville stop of the Velocity Tour.     According to this report by the National Venture Capital Association, nine companies in the Charlottesville, VA MSA received $27.7 million in venture funding in 2015. That makes Charlottesville #1 out of 133 MSAs in both the greatest growth (at 55.2 percent ) and the greatest rate of growth as measured by venture investment dollars with a 156.5 percent increase since 2010.
