Charlottesville Leaders Convene Community Dialogue on the Future of the Downtown Mall

Charlottesville, VA — (March 12, 2026) As the Downtown Mall marks its 50th anniversary, the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council (CBIC) is convening civic, business, and community leaders for a special community forum focused on the Mall’s future.
On Tuesday, March 17, CBIC will host a special edition of its co-hosted Charlottesville Entrepreneurs & Espresso series at the CODE Building’s Irving Theater, bringing together regional leaders for a panel discussion and community brainstorm exploring how the Downtown Mall can thrive for the next 50 years.
Widely recognized as one of the nation’s most iconic pedestrian malls, Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall remains a defining feature of the region’s cultural and economic identity. Yet like many downtown districts nationwide, it faces new pressures. The conversation comes at a moment of transition for downtown districts nationwide. In Charlottesville, foot traffic has declined nearly 30 percent since 2017, and Charlottesville’s share of the region’s retail economy has fallen every year of the last decade, raising questions about how the area can evolve while preserving the qualities that made it a national model for pedestrian downtowns.
This forum will bring together voices from across the community to examine these trends, explore opportunities, and identify practical strategies to strengthen the Mall as a destination for residents, visitors, entrepreneurs, and local businesses.
“This conversation is about more than one place,” said Tracey Greene, Executive Director of CBIC. “The Downtown Mall is a cornerstone of Charlottesville’s economic vitality and creative spirit. As we celebrate its first fifty years, this is an opportunity for the community to come together and imagine what the next fifty can look like.”

- How programming, anchors, and community-led initiatives can strengthen both daytime and evening activity
Following the panel discussion, the event will shift into a facilitated community brainstorm, inviting attendees to share ideas and identify opportunities for action.
