You Are Invited to the Cville Tech Community's Peaceful & Collaborative Response:
In life, we are at times offered the opportunity to step outside the day-to-day and use our talents to make a real difference in our world. The devastating violence of August 12th has brought unprecedented national and international attention on our city. Phrases like "before Charlottesville" and "after Charlottesville" are now used in national media as shorthand to refer to that violence.
The question is, will these events be seen as a turning point or just another milestone on a long and tragic path?
We believe that the Charlottesville community has a unique opportunity to come together and lead by example. While the tech community is but a single part of the broader Cville community, we are also a highly capable and well-networked group of people — and our industry is built around quickly finding solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems.
This opportunity is both fleeting, and as big as we want to make it. If we are to make a significant impact, we must work together. That's why this Thursday, the tech community will get together in person (along with the leaders of other civic groups in Charlottesville) for three short hours, to see what is possible.
We'll innovate. We'll work from any ideas that folks already have. And we'll set the stage for collaboration.
We can't do this without you. Come ready to brainstorm, as this will be a highly engaging and participant-driven event. The power of bringing the tech community together is evident during events like Startup Weekend and the recent Civic Innovation Day — together, we are capable of great things.
We are Charlottesville. Together, we can begin to lead our city out of the events of two weeks ago into a brighter, stronger, and more equitable future.
Hope to see you on Thursday,
Co-Organizers Jessica Glendinning and Lucas Cioffi
This event is open to all members of the Cville tech community and any member of the Charlottesville community at large who is interested in brainstorming innovative & surprising solutions/responses to the events of August 12th.
The goal is to create space for people to propose ideas and collaborate around potential solutions in order to make an actual impact. (As currently envisioned, this event will be a mashup of formats — BeCamp, Civic Innovation Day, and Startup Weekend.)
