Charlottesville Women in Tech recently held an event featuring a discussion on open data and the possibilities it offers for all of us to become more involved in our local government: more aware, more informed, and more engaged. The panelists were Kristin Szakos, Charlottesville City councilor, Lucas Ames, founder of Smart Cville, and Lucas Cioffi, senior software developer at Locus Health and founder of the Civic Tech Code School. Plan to join Virginia Bio for a discussion around women building biotechnology in Virginia. This lunch meeting, to be held on Thursday, October 13 at 11:30 am in Richmond, follows on a conference that took place in September at the Anova Center for Personalized Health on 'Women Building Bio: the XX Factor'. 

At the 12th annual Charlottesville Business Innovation Council Tech Tour, more than 390 students from 23 area high schools traveled to companies around the Charlottesville and Albemarle County to learn about the career opportunities available.

On Thursday the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council held a Tech Night Takeover at the Haven with a focus on space for entrepreneurial growth in Charlottesville. One of the larger TNT events to date, The Haven was abuzz with members of the startup community, real estate developers, and city, county, and elected officials, a testament to the importance of the topic.

On October 9, 2014 I had the great fortune to attend my first CBIC Tech Tour. I joined more than 350 Virginia high school and middle school students to visit and get to know three of the nearly 90 Charlottesville companies and organizations to participate in this year's Tech Tour: the U.Va. Digital Media Lab, SNL Financial, and Hemoshear.
