The University of Virginia, a public institution with an enrollment of 20,000 students, invites applications for the position of Access Control Specialist

As a member of the Housing & Residence Life IT department, the Access Control Specialist is responsible for programming, troubleshooting, monitoring, and supporting card-based electronic door access control services in Housing & Residence Life (HRL) facilities. This position is responsible for managing door access through the University-wide CBORD® CS Gold® access control system. The Access Control Specialist reports to the Assistant Director of Information Technology.

 Perform electronic access control programming including programming access for patrons in CS Gold®; scheduling doors for locking and unlocking as requested by HRL leadership team; troubleshooting access issues reported by employees, residents, and conference guests; and responding to after-hours emergencies, as needed.  Manage electronic access system databases including developing, documenting and updating security roles for HRL facilities; performing regular audits of security roles, group membership, access activity; importing data into CS Gold® database; scheduling or running reports and investigating incidents as needed.  Manage electronic access equipment including organizing and managing electronic access card inventory; coordinating with Business Operations and Facilities Management when needed for the repair of defective door hardware; acting as a liaison with Business Operations for hardware installations, repairs, and testing to ensure departmental security protocols are followed.  Provide training to staff in basic access troubleshooting, issuing temporary/summer access cards, and creating PINs.  Assist the IT team in performing audits of inventory and assets; network registration; virus, malware, security and sensitive data scans; and user accounts.


 High School Diploma required with 5-7 years’ applicable work experience OR Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution with 1-3 years’ applicable work experience. Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, technology, or related field preferred.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Web-based applications, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Access), and other common Windows-based applications. Proficient in the use of a computer for maintaining accurate and complete records. Basic understanding of relational database concepts required. Ability to read and understand flow charts, block diagrams, and service manuals.  Advanced skill in diagnosing problems and determining appropriate solutions. Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills. Ability to train and instruct others, including conveying technical information to non-technical users verbally and in writing. Ability to provide excellent customer service and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and partners. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to be flexible and agile in meeting the demands of unexpected work or problems  CS Gold® experience, knowledge of SQL, and ability to query Oracle database preferred. Knowledge of industry standard report writing tools such as Crystal Reports preferred. Experience drafting and enforcing policies preferred.
