Early-stage innovators to receive actionable feedback from investors and business strategy from the Virginia Small Business Development Center

(Charlottesville, VA) March 25, 2021- The Virginia Small Business Development Center (VSBDC), in collaboration with the Charlottesville Angel Network (CAN), has developed a new program, Pitch Preview, to assist early-stage entrepreneurs in fine tuning their funding pitch before giving formal pitches to angel investors. The plan is to offer this ongoing resource three times per year to help high growth potential, innovative businesses reach commercial success and, ultimately, boost
our local economy and job market.

"The Charlottesville Angel Network is proud to partner with CV SBDC to help foster the next batch of great startups in Central Virginia,” commented Arthur Watson, President of CAN. “At CAN, we invest to foster a business environment where entrepreneurs grow, thrive and enrich the community. Our hope is that this leads to creating a more dynamic business environment and new jobs in Virginia."

Five applicants will be selected for each Pitch Preview event, with the inaugural event to be held April 29 from 12:00-3:00 pm. Participants commit to thirty-minute time slots with a 15-minute pitch. For those that are not quite ready to participate in this round, the Central Virginia SBDC will soon offer a pitch preparation and practice program, which is still in development. Subsequent event dates for Pitch Preview will take place on July 29 and September 30.

"The number of startups in America doubled from Q4 2019 to Q4 2020,” said Rebecca Haydock, Director of the CV SBDC. “That trend is clear in Virginia as we see more valuable innovation-based startups seeking funding. Unfortunately, too many don’t succeed because their pitches aren’t adequately prepared or delivered. Offering feedback from experienced angel investors is a win-win as CAN members get to meet bright entrepreneurs early in the process, while the entrepreneurs hone their skills for successful fundraising."

Applicants may also choose to seek counseling from the Central Virginia SBDC on other areas of their business to assure they have considered and fine-tuned every aspect of their business strategy.

Central Virginia SBDC is hosted by Community Investment Collaborative and funded in part through a
cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, George Mason University, and local
supporters. The Virginia SBDC is an accredited member of America’s SBDC. CV SBDC provides hands-on help
and access to business experts and relevant resources, at no charge, to empower entrepreneurs to achieve
their goals.
