Program: In the past few weeks both VCU and U.Va have announced fantastic programs that have the power to significantly impact the formation of new life science companies and speed technology transfer into commercialization. We will learn about the brand new seed fund which will deploy $10 million over the next 10 years investing in U.Va. start-ups. We will talk also about VCU’s Quest Innovation Fund which was recently expanded to include additional funding for "proof of concept" work that will help to de-risk innovation and open the door to new partnership and investment.

HemoShear Therapeutics Races Toward Discovery of Treatments for Children's Rare Diseases

[Charlottesville, VA - January 6, 2016] --  HemoShear Therapeutics, LLC, (HemoShear) a privately held discovery-stage biotechnology company, and Children's National Health System, a non-profit leading research and treatment center for children with rare diseases, today announced study results that demonstrated successful restoration of propionic acidemia (PA), a rare metabolic disorder, using explanted liver tissue from a child with the disease. This study, published in the Journal of Molecular Genetics and Metabolism, demonstrated a novel method of recreating the disease in the laboratory for discovery of treatments for PA that may extend the lives of these children and possibly cure the disease.

CBIC director and the chief operations officer of the local tech firm Centridian Llc. will take over as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce. As of Jan. 1, Adrian Felts has assumed the office previously held by Chad Zakaib, vice president of operations for Legacy Hospice.
